AMANDA

The thing about gray sweatpants that men didn’t understand was that they acted like a wet T-shirt—allowing onlookers to see every lump and bump.

Or, in this case, lack thereof.

No, not his cock—that was definitely visible, one massive specimen—but the lump missing from Connor’s right pocket. The knife wasn’t on him. From the corner of my eye, I could see it still sitting open across from me, its blade glinting in the sunlight, mere feet from my grasp.

I had about ten seconds to decide if I had enough physical strength to shove him off me and sink the knife into him before he could snag it first. Even if I did somehow manage to get the knife…what then? Could I really kill Connor? If I did, I would still need his thumbprint to get out of his apartment, maybe even his retinal scan to get out of the building—I’d have to hack his body into bits. Not to mention the ankle monitor I still had on. I might somehow escape the building, but for how long? He had to have security cameras, back-up plans, hired thugs that would shoot first and ask questions later.

No, I couldn’t risk it. Any attempt to escape now would only result in my suffering or my death, and then, there would be no hope for the others trapped. I was in a unique position, and I couldn’t rush it—I had to give this plan time to work. Connor had to trust me. I had to learn more about how the building was set up, and how he ran things, if I ever wanted to escape and save the others.

Given no choice, I did the only thing I could do: I obeyed Connor’s orders and held perfectly still while he released me from the cuffs. As soon as they were off, his hand was around my neck in a vice-grip, pinning me to the couch. He thought I would run.

“I’m not going to try and escape,” I choked out. Not yet. Connor released some of the pressure so that I could breathe again, but he kept his hand where it was. Taking a giant gamble, I placed my free hand on his chest. “Why would I run?”

His eyes darted down to where I had placed my palm over his heart. His eyebrows pinched tightly together as he glared at my hand.

“What are you doing?” he hissed.

I moved my hand away, stung. “I don’t know. I’m sorry, I just…”

“You just what?”

“I—I wanted to touch you. I acted before I thought about it. I’m sorry.” I forced my eyes to the floor.

For a moment, he didn’t say anything. His body was crushing mine into the couch, and I watched his chest rise and fall. Eventually, his nostrils flared.

“You don’t think I know what you’re doing?” Connor asked. He moved his hand off my neck to pinch my jaw instead, forcing my eyes up to his. I wanted to respond, but I couldn’t. He looked so angry. “You’re not the first, Amanda, to try and manipulate me into caring about you.
